I have been in full-time practice as a psychotherapist since 1981 and a member of the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT) since 1985. Over these many years of experience with many thousands of clients I’ve grown skillful at recognizing and helping people see the ways they create unnecessary suffering in their lives. None of us are exempt from this often unconscious activity of mind. I’ve become skillful in this work and can help you see your role in mental, emotional and relational suffering and can help you develop skills through mindfulness and self-compassion to stop creating extra suffering in your life. In a very real way, you can do more to care for and heal yourself than anyone else can – let me teach you how.

My Background

I have been deeply invested in meditation practice and the art of psychotherapy since 1974 and I’m committed to bring mindfulness into medicine, healthcare and society. I’m licensed and in private practice as a counselor in Chico California specializing in mindfulness-based psychotherapy. I am the author of The Mindful Path Through Shyness: How mindfulness and acceptance can free you from shyness, social anxiety and avoidance, and Living with Your Heart Wide Open, how mindfulness and compassion can free you from unworthiness, inadequacy and shame.” I had the pleasure of coauthoring this second book with my dear friend Bob Stahl. In addition to my private practice with individual, couples and groups I have been conducting the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Clinic online and at Enloe Medical Center in Chico, CA. since 1995. Mindfulness enables people to experience levels of wholeness, freedom and completeness that enable to heal in the truest sense of this word, defined by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn as “coming to terms with things as they are”.

I’m certified as a provider of Continuing Education and have been conducting six or more fully accredited retreats a year since 1998 to train physicians, psychologists, nurses and licensed mental health professionals in the skills of mindfulness. In this same context I provide training for persons wanting to learn the skills of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction through internships and didactic instruction both online and in my brick and mortar program at Enloe Medical Center.

In addition to my work in medicine and psychotherapy, I provide mindfulness workshops for Spirit Rock Meditation Center in Marin, CA, for Skycreek Dharma Center, for city and county government employees in Chico and Butte County, CA, and for federal agencies such as HUD and US Forest service. I have provided numerous mindfulness workshops for many public and private companies and organizations including: Butte College employees and students, Chico State University students and employees, Sierra Nevada Brewery managers, and employees of Blue Shield Health Insurance Corporation, city managers and the community of Chico, The American Academy of Pain Management, and the Investigating and Integrating Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society Annual Conference in Massachusetts.

The Healing Journey

The success of my work is measured by the benefits received by my clients. There is no greater reward than to see those in my care heal, grow and find new levels of awakening and freedom in their lives. If we are able to connect in a good way I may be able to help you too find the insights you need to free yourself from unnecessary suffering. I do not employ quick fix or trendy techniques to help the people I serve. My skill lies in joining you where you are at and helping you develop the skills to help yourself. In all counseling it is the relationship that heals so a huge part of the benefit you may gain from counseling with me will come from the strength of the relationship we create in our interactions together. My work is based on substantial and well respected science and you may investigate the value of the mindfulness-based approaches to treatment through the research pages and links on this website as well as in the bibliographies of my books.
